Ely is an historic cathedral city in Cambridgeshire that is home to about 20,000 people. Easily the most prominent building on Ely’s skyline is Ely Cathedral which took over 100 years to build and was finally completed in 1189. Today the cathedral helps make Ely a unique place to live and it stands as a marker to Ely’s former ecclesiastical importance. Due to the town’s long history, there are many notable buildings in Ely, 182 of which are listed. One interesting example is St Mary’s Vicarage, known locally as Cromwell’s House as it was Oliver Cromwell’s residence between 1638 and 1647. Today the vicarage has been converted into a museum dedicated to exploring life in the 17th century. Another interesting example is Ely Gaol, a 17th century prison, and today the gaol is one of Ely’s best loved museums. Many of the artefacts in the Ely Museum date back to the Norman era and were unearthed under Cherry Hill. The hill is thought to be the remains of a Norman castle and although nothing remains of the castle today, visitors can enjoy exploring the hill and the surrounding parkland. Ely clearly has a lot to offer and in the last 12 months, reallymoving.com and our licensed conveyancers have helped almost 300 people relocate to Ely.

Ely is built on a 23 mile Kimmeridge clay island, at the highest point in the Fens and the city has a long history of clay mining. Prospective home buyers must be wary as mining can lead to subsidence issues and even property collapse. This is one reason that reallymoving.com highly recommends the services of our expert conveyancers as they will provide you with a comprehensive mining search, detailing all previous mining activity and ground stability issues.

With reallymoving.com and our partners in conveyancing, you can be sure that your move to Ely will proceed without any nasty surprises. This will give you the peace of mind necessary to relax and begin exploring everything that Ely has to offer.
